The town set on neighboring slopes of the Sazava river, on the west part of Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Ceskomoravska vrchovina). A gymnasium had been established there in 1735, the place where many persons of consequences studied like Karel Havlicek Borovsky, Bedrich Smetana and others. The historical centre has been proclaimed as a monument zone. The main square is fully surrounded by gable houses. The Renaissance city hall rebuilt in 17th century is another worthy building. On the place of former ford there is the church of St. Katerina, lately renewed. There are other significant ecclesiastic buildings as the Gothic church of Nanebevzeti Panny Marie, the monastery with the church of St. Family from the end of 17th century or the church of St. Vojtech from 16th century.
